Gu Yan wasn’t sure why he asked that, but one thought flashed through her mind—was he planning to torture her again at the pool next time? So she shook her head desperately. “I don’t like it! I don’t like it anywhere.”

Lu Wentian wore an air of calm leisure. He explained his question seriously, “I’m asking if you like the pool, not if you like what happens at the pool.”

Before Gu Yan could respond, he righteously withdrew his arm from the wall and said enigmatically, “Looks like Lu Ye does care about you.”

He even knew what she liked.

Gu Yan wanted to say they were engaged, so wasn’t it natural that Lu Ye understood her? She knew Lu Ye well enough to know he preferred boxer briefs over briefs.

Whether it was her silence or something else, Lu Wentian’s expression darkened, and he turned to leave, dropping a cold and rational remark, “Fix your clothes.”

The tone was completely devoid of the passion he had shown earlier, rational and indifferent.

Gu Yan glared at his retreating back. So now he cared about her appearance? If he was afraid of being seen through, why act this way?

“Mr. Lu!” Gu Yan remembered something and called out before he opened the door.

Lu Wentian turned to look at her, expression unreadable.

Gu Yan frowned slightly. “Even if that night was my fault, you’ve been deliberately tormenting me these past few times; it should be even now. Can you stop treating me like this from now on?”

“Especially in places where anyone from the company or family is present.”

Lu Wentian’s face showed some thoughtfulness, his manner refined and steady, but he only said, “Do I look easy to talk to?”

Gu Yan was speechless.

So just because she got drunk that night and slept with him, she was supposed to be on edge all the time until he cooled off? Difficult indeed.

In her past understanding, Lu Wentian was like a robot.

He opened the door and left, helping her close it halfway. The door’s reflection showed her standing behind, looking unsure how to face the countless workdays ahead.

Whether it was helplessness or fear, her eyes seemed reddened.

Finally, Lu Wentian shut the door completely.

Gu Yan tidied herself for five or six minutes inside. Seeing nothing else to do, she opened the door and stepped out.

But as soon as she did, someone almost collided with her.

Startled, Gu Yan gasped and instinctively stepped back into the restroom.

Thinking it over, something felt off. Even if she ran into someone going to the restroom, why would she need to hide?

This was like the guilty hiding the silver coins.

So she calmed down and stepped out.

He Bai Zhuo looked at her as if he didn’t recognize her and asked the man in the living room, “Is there a guest?”

Lu Wentian answered businesslike, “The newly hired secretary handling the files.”

He Bai Zhuo nodded, “Oh~ you’ve hired someone? I thought you were so picky no one could manage.”

Listening to their conversation, Gu Yan felt somewhat at ease.

So she was transferred here because the position was vacant.

“Hello, my name is He Bai Zhuo.”

Gu Yan shook his hand politely and confidently.

Her awkwardness and unease likely only showed around Lu Wentian.

Her voice was soft and low: “Gu Yan.”

After greeting, in front of the guests, she introduced herself as Lu Wentian’s niece-in-law and added, “I’m going to look for Lu Ye.”

Lu Wentian nodded slightly.

After they left, He Bai Zhuo approached and instantly shifted to a sly, cunning demeanor. “Seeing Lu Ye outside, I knew that little butterfly was here too.”

His 24k titanium-alloy sharp eyes flicked over Lu Wentian’s clothes.

There were still small wrinkles where a girl’s palm had gripped the fabric.

Lu Wentian glanced down along his line of sight, showing no intention to change.

“Tsk! If you’re going to play like this, you might as well openly and officially take her in,” He Bai Zhuo said, eyeing him.

Lu Wentian raised his eyes to look at him.

“If I dared to steal her, could she withstand it?”

He Bai Zhuo scratched his brow with his fingertips.

It did seem unlikely. Lu Wentian was experienced and impervious to poison, but Gu Yan would be cursed to death by the Lu family and drowned in public opinion.

“I want to scare her, not kill her,” Lu Wentian said lightly.

He Bai Zhuo finally understood. Lu Wentian seemed to enjoy the thrill of secrecy, and there was a legitimate reason behind it — making Gu Yan afraid to run, refuse, or make a fuss.

It was certainly easier than openly demanding her.

Otherwise, if Lu Wentian openly asked the family for Gu Yan now, the patriarch might well eliminate her.

She would have to be wary of many more things.

With secrecy, at least Gu Yan only had to fear Lu Wentian.

“Has the engagement between Lu Ye and her not been annulled?”

Previously, it was said both should agree to cancel, so why was everything unchanged?

This was the key.

As long as the engagement was broken, Gu Yan would have no ties with the Lu family. Over time, dating freely would be perfectly normal.

“Since Gu Yan brought it up, and you are the head of the family, if you spoke up, the old man probably wouldn’t say much,” He Bai Zhuo said.

Lu Wentian seemed to sneer at him.

“Oh right, you don’t really have a proper reason to make them break the engagement,” He Bai Zhuo answered himself.

If Lu Wentian advocated breaking it off, he’d look abnormal.

So this matter had to be decided by Lu Ye himself.

“Why does Lu Ye refuse? And even shoved her over to you? He’s really clever!”

Surely he wanted to pawn Gu Yan off on Lu Wentian to curry favor with his uncle.

Unaware he was pushing his fiancée into the big bad wolf’s jaws.

And he would be a divine assist.

Lu Wentian’s gaze drifted quietly out the window. “Not sure.”

He Bai Zhuo’s eyelid twitched. “Could it be your nephew has fallen for Gu Yan? Can’t bear to part?”

Lu Wentian said nothing, his expression even more inscrutable.

After saying this, He Bai Zhuo felt the whole thing was becoming a little frightening and didn’t dare think further about the competition arena.

“Actually stealing her wouldn’t be impossible,” Lu Wentian suddenly said.

If he truly wanted a woman, even if she was his niece-in-law, one sentence annulling Lu Ye’s engagement would only earn him a few days of family backlash.

Without him, the group wouldn’t run for a day; compared to that, a woman was nothing.

But?

He Bai Zhuo looked at him.

Lu Wentian then turned his head, smoothing the wrinkles on his clothes that Gu Yan had left.

“She’s unwilling.”

“…”

He Bai Zhuo never expected that to be the reason.

“She was willing to get engaged to Lu Ye back then; aren’t you better looking than him?”

Gu Yan’s gaze was strange.

This was truly an unexpected reason. Which woman in the capital wouldn’t dream of Lu Wentian? Yet she still didn’t like him.

“So, you plan to keep this kind of relationship until the day she’s willing,” He Bai Zhuo said uncertainly.

“Using this method — threatening and scaring, plus sleeping with her yourself?”

Honestly, it wasn’t impossible. It was rather novel.
