Volume One, Chapter Six: Giving Her to Him

Relieved?
A little—at least it meant he wasn’t truly going to hold it against her.
Frustrated?
Yes, too. In her heart, Lu Wentian was so distinguished and composed, yet his handling of emotions was even worse than Lu Ye’s flirtations.
“Wife?” Lu Ye suddenly appeared at the kitchen doorway.
Gu Yan finished washing the dishes and walked out of the kitchen without looking at him. Passing by Lu Ye, she said flatly, “Call me that again and I’ll poison your voice.”
Lu Ye bit his lip instinctively. Hadn’t Gu Yan’s previous profession been related to pharmacology or nursing?
He followed her out, tilting his head to look at her and lowered his voice to mimic hers:
“Still that mad?”
Gu Yan kept her head down and entered the living room, feeling that even hearing another word would dirty her ears.
Until Lu Ye said, “I told grandpa I’m staying over tonight.”
She finally frowned and looked over.
After staring for a full five seconds, she said, “Lu Ye, you don’t want to annul the marriage, do you?”
Lu Ye frowned slightly.
He kind of did, but couldn’t quite put his finger on why, so he shrugged without admitting anything.
“Why wouldn’t I? I have five women a day, how’s that not good? It’s just that my uncle landed a big deal, you heard about it…”
“It’s none of my business.”
Gu Yan already knew that excuse. She was just here to bring good fortune to the Lu family; if she left, would their business suffer?
“None of my business either, so isn’t that why I’m planning to bring it up with grandpa? So you better treat me better.” Lu Ye openly wielded his influence to intimidate her.
Gu Yan took a deep breath.
“Want some water?” His tone was surprisingly decent.
Lu Ye smiled at her.
In the past, she would have obediently handed him the water by now, but this time, though she asked, her eyes seemed to want to gouge him.
“Forget it.” He headed toward the stairs. “Afraid you’ll poison me, I’ll talk to grandpa. Wait for my news.”
In the study.
Lu Ye lightly knocked on the door and went in.
His steps paused. “Is uncle here?”
Lu Wentian stood leisurely by the window like a wild crane, glanced at him, and was about to leave.
“Then I’m late.” Lu Ye smiled awkwardly and asked grandpa, “Did you talk about my future aunt?”
Lu Wentian ignored him.
Lu Ye thought for a moment and called him back, “Uncle.”

Lu Wentian turned but said nothing.
“I’m here to talk to grandpa about Gu Yan’s annulment. Want to listen in?”
Lu Wentian’s expression was calm. “Why annul when things are fine?”
“That’s what I said too. It was just that I borrowed some actress to meet a physical need; I didn’t go inside. She had to make a fuss; I had no choice. I’m worried it might affect your Taihe project, so I thought you should hear it too.”
Grandpa raised his eyebrows. “You want to annul the engagement?”
Lu Ye said, “I don’t want to upset you, but feelings can’t be forced, right?”
He added, “I’m just not sure if breaking the engagement would affect the family business.”
When he said this, Lu Ye looked at Lu Wentian.
Lu Wentian was running the company and arguably had more authority than grandpa.
Moreover, Lu Ye had realized something these past two years—
The person Gu Yan feared most in the Lu family was Lu Wentian.
Grandpa came second.
If Uncle Lu Wentian opposed the annulment, Gu Yan probably wouldn’t dare push for it.
Lu Wentian seemed indifferent, hands in his trousers pockets, “You cause trouble, I fix it?”
Grandpa frowned, “That master back then said Gu Yan could bring prosperity to the Lu family. But it seems that as long as Gu Yan stays in the capital, within Lu Corporation or Zijin Media, it’s almost the same effect?”
Lu Ye understood: even if the engagement was broken, as long as Gu Yan stayed on as a secretary at Zijin Media, the impact wouldn’t be significant?
He frowned inwardly.
Boldly, he said, “That’s a pity.”
“What’s wrong?” Grandpa looked over.
Lu Ye told the truth, “The HR at Zijin Media mentioned that Gu Yan inquired about resigning.”
“Gu Yan has a friend. I’ve kept an eye out. From what I’ve heard, after breaking the engagement, Gu Yan plans to resign and leave the capital.”
“That won’t do!”
Grandpa immediately objected.
Lu Corporation had been around for so many years; if something happened because of Gu Yan, he wouldn’t have the face to meet his ancestors in a few years.
Grandpa looked at Lu Ye, “No matter how you explain it, this engagement must continue. If you two separate, it’ll be after I’m six feet under!”
Lu Ye got the message—it simply wasn’t going to happen.
Normally, once his goal was achieved, he would leave and tell Gu Yan the outcome.
But Gu Yan hadn’t been so compliant these days.
If he didn’t give her any concessions, it would only push her further.
So he said, “Gu Yan’s pretty mad this time. She keeps saying she wants to work outside. I’m afraid she’ll keep pushing to cancel the marriage. Should I just agree?”

Grandpa was calm. For two years, Gu Yan had taken care of Lu Ye’s daily needs quietly, with no ambitions to meddle in business secrets.
He replied offhandedly, “Isn’t she your secretary now? Make her go to the office every day.”
Lu Ye felt this wasn’t right.
“She’s disgusted by me now. How can she work under me?”
Then he looked at Lu Wentian, “Or maybe put her somewhere else? Uncle, just give her any position to keep her busy?”
Lu Ye thought, Gu Yan feared Lu Wentian. If she were under his watchful eye, she wouldn’t dare run off.
And he wouldn’t have to worry about her constantly watching him.
Two birds with one stone.
Lu Wentian heard this calmly; only a faint gleam flashed in his eyes.
His thin lips moved slightly, “I don’t support freeloaders.”
Lu Ye was frustrated—uncle really couldn’t be swayed.
“Uncle, Gu Yan isn’t a freeloader. She’s the Lu family’s lucky charm. With her around, your career will surely flourish!”
Grandpa also looked at Lu Wentian.
Lu Wentian met those expectant eyes with a cold face and strode away, “If you mistreat her, don’t blame me for being unkind.”
Lu Ye smiled; that was his way of agreeing.
“Thanks.”
Gu Yan was still waiting in the living room.
She heard someone come downstairs and thought it was Lu Ye, but it was Lu Wentian. Silently, she sat back down.
Lu Wentian reached the stairs and saw a head peeking from the sofa, eyes full of hope that dimmed when they saw him.
He grabbed his coat, lips pressed tight, and left.
After another ten minutes, Lu Ye finally came down.
“How did it go?” Gu Yan stood up and asked.
Lu Ye shrugged helplessly, “Grandpa absolutely refuses. He’s worried about the family business. I don’t dare provoke him—if something happened, it’d be life or death.”
The more Gu Yan heard, the more irritated she became.
She hadn’t expected the Lu family to be such a trap: easy to enter, hard to leave.
“I don’t care.” She was resolute. “That’s your family’s problem…”
“Don’t rush. We already have a plan B.”
