Gu Yan’s heart skipped a beat, but upon hearing the old man’s words, she held back a laugh.

He Bo was clearly teasing the elder, “Isn’t it just because you’re anxious?”

Lu Lao shot him a sharp glance.

After finishing breakfast, Gu Yan helped tidy up what needed to be done, then greeted Lu Lao before leaving Phoenix Garden.

Her belongings had already been moved to Hua Lili’s place; she definitely wouldn’t be going to Man Ting Fang Hua.

She drove to Zijin Media.

On the way, she called Hua Lili to inform her about the engagement being called off and her plan to resign.

“Good move! So, what kind of job are you planning to look for now?”

Gu Yan was troubled by this very question.

She had once considered becoming a nurse, but due to an accident, she never obtained her diploma; no hospital would probably hire her.

Unless she went back to complete her adult undergraduate studies and even pursue further education.

She wasn’t short of money now, just lacking the right image.

“Well...” Hua Lili pondered, “With your qualities, you’d definitely become a sensation in the entertainment industry.”

Gu Yan smiled, “You know better than anyone how hellish the entertainment world is. You want me to join you?”

Hua Lili bit her lip, hesitating to speak, “I’m just...”

“I know.”

Gu Yan understood her concern—that she feared Gu Yan might be haunted by the past accident if she continued in medicine.

“I’m serious, Yan Yan,” Hua Lili said confidently. “With your looks, the current entertainment scene practically demands faces like yours. Beauty, figure, background—you have it all. You’d be famous in no time.”

Gu Yan chuckled, nodding. “I really am outstanding.”

First, she needed to settle her current job.

She parked across from Zijin Media and walked over quietly, not wanting to draw attention.

When she went to human resources, they said Lu Ye was out, but they could handle the formalities.

Gu Yan nodded and signed the necessary papers.

She even asked, “I don’t have to compensate the company, right?”

The HR smiled, “Compensate for what? Lu Ye knows your capabilities, which is why this was arranged.”

At that moment, Gu Yan didn’t sense anything amiss.

Until she stepped out of the company.

A call came through.

“Is this Miss Gu Yan?”

Hearing the pleasant female voice, she started to hang up while walking, “Sorry, I don’t take loans, buy cars, or houses. Thank you.”

She was even about to block the number as spam.

But the call came again the next second.

Her finger moved to block it but accidentally answered.

On the other end, a voice said, “Miss Gu, this is the Secretariat Department at Lu Feng Financial Building...”

Gu Yan paused, placing the phone back to her ear.

Perhaps afraid she would hang up again, the voice hurriedly continued, “We’re notifying you to report here today. Someone at the front desk will escort you upstairs to meet Secretary Chief Cong Wen.”

Then the call ended.

They truly feared she would hang up; after all, this was an instruction from Secretary Cong, and if mishandled, it could displease Mr. Lu directly.

Secretary Cong and Mr. Lu shared a close bond.

Gu Yan stood by the car, trying to collect her thoughts, reviewing the signed documents.

After figuring things out, she immediately called Lu Ye.

“Lu Ye, you better explain why I suddenly became an employee at Lu Feng Financial.”

Lu Ye heard the sharp tone in her voice.

He laughed awkwardly, “Huh? I’m climbing a mountain, signal’s bad... Your work? Grandpa said he didn’t want you to bother me, so he arranged a new job for you. It’s not my doing, all grandpa’s decision.”

Half an hour later.

Gu Yan stood beneath Lu Feng Financial Building.

She wished she could cut off her own hands for not reading the transfer contract carefully before signing—the penalty for breach was beyond what she could afford.

Entering the lobby, someone did come to escort her.

Then she met Cong Wen.

“Miss Gu!” Cong Wen shook her hand.

Her title had shifted from Young Madam to Miss Gu.

Gu Yan politely extended her hand.

Cong Wen said nothing more, completed the formalities, showed her around the Secretariat Department office, and pointed out her workstation.

Sitting down, Gu Yan still hadn’t fully grasped the situation.

Her mind echoed one phrase: “I call you Father.”

She hoped the old man’s arrangement to transfer her here was unknown to Lu Wentian, as he was always so busy.

He probably wouldn’t pay attention to such an unknown nobody like her.

That whole day, she had very little work and was mostly familiarizing herself with the role—not tiring at all.

If anything, the most exhausting part was constantly fearing Lu Wentian might suddenly appear at the Secretariat Department and make her fulfill that promise.

But days passed without a sign of him.

Until one day, she was carrying a stack of materials borrowed from a colleague—about secretarial duties, how to take minutes, how to organize reports—heading to the print room.

Just as she was about to enter, someone opened the door from the opposite side, and she bumped right into him.

Lu Wentian looked down at her with an expressionless face.

Or rather, his deep brown eyes held a trace of amusement.

Gu Yan froze in place; the anxiety that had been weighing on her for days finally died.

She forced herself to lower her brows and said, “Hello, Mr. Lu.”

Lu Wentian glanced at the documents in her arms, casually yet authoritatively, “Secretariat Department?”

Gu Yan swallowed hard, silent.

“Got in through the back door?” His thin lips curled slightly.

This sentence was humiliating enough, but he added, “Don’t like it?”

Gu Yan looked up sharply, her ears reddening rapidly, her eyes betraying a momentary chaos.

After all, she was not the composed Lu Wentian.

Even speaking like that, his face was calm and steady.

Yet in that instant, Gu Yan’s mind flashed the words she had once told him: “Don’t go behind my back...”

She truly hadn’t expected this man to be so cruel in private.

This was what he meant by not bothering to investigate?

Clearly, he was only using her to provoke his ex-girlfriend.

By the time Gu Yan felt her head was about to burst, Lu Wentian had already left—as if he had never appeared at all.

After printing, she returned to the Secretariat Department, distracted, sensing an ominous premonition.

But Lu Wentian did not come looking for her.

Not until the end of the workday.

Cong Wen approached her.

“Secretary Gu?”

Gu Yan looked up.

Cong Wen was about twenty-seven or twenty-eight, with a square face that gave an impression of maturity and steadiness, naturally making others feel restrained.

“I need to trouble you with something.” Holding some documents, he passed them over two desks to her.

He looked urgent. “Please organize this and deliver it to Mr. Lu’s office later.”

“All right...” Gu Yan stiffened slightly. “Where exactly?”
