Chapter Twenty-Eight: Ning Huaizhi Was Struck by a Car
Hiding a beauty in a golden house?
Qin Qiuhong’s mind drifted back to Ning Huaizhi’s eyes. Unlike how they appeared at the banquet, those eyes were moist, seemingly concealing a great deal of grievance and sorrow.
If she were a "beauty," then that would certainly be fine.
It was just that a hospital was hardly a golden house; if one were to hide her away, perhaps the lakeside villa would be more suitable...
Qin Qiuhong quickly reined in his thoughts. He realized he was being led astray by Qin Qiulan.
With a cold expression, he spoke up: "Don’t talk nonsense."
He hadn't refuted her immediately, lingering for a moment—that alone was already quite suspicious.
Qin Qiulan walked over to his side with a smile, reached out to drape her arm around his neck, and leaned in close to his ear. "What? Are you keeping secrets from your sister? Tell me quickly, who exactly is that girl? I want to get on good terms with her in advance."
Qin Qiuhong glanced at her and brushed her hand away.
"Spare me that; there is no such person."
"Fine."
Qin Qiulan did not press further. She knew her younger brother; he was a tight-lipped man. If he didn't want to talk about something, no one could make him speak.
Qin Qiulan rolled her eyes. Even if he wouldn't tell her, she could find ways to investigate. There was nothing in this world she couldn't uncover.
As Qin Qiulan left the office, Qin Qiuhong merely glanced after her, not giving it much thought. In reality, he felt a massive sense of relief. Qin Qiulan was far too boisterous; if he told her about Ning Huaizhi, she would definitely rush to the hospital, and Ning Huaizhi couldn't handle such a disturbance.
Perhaps when she recovered, he could let his sister meet her. Qin Qiulan had already been quite fond of Ning Huaizhi; perhaps they could even become good friends.
After leaving the office, Qin Qiulan went straight to find Qin Qiuhong’s secretary.
"Secretary Li, what did Qin Qiuhong do this morning?" She blinked, her eyes full of curiosity.
Secretary Li shook his head. "I apologize, Miss Qin, I don’t know about the President’s business."
Qin Qiulan was dissatisfied. "You are his secretary. How could you not know? You just don’t want to tell me."
"If Miss Qin really wants to know, why not ask the President yourself?"
If he were willing to tell her, would she have come to ask the secretary? Qin Qiulan pouted, eventually turning away. Forget it; she could just investigate it herself.
...
"The plan fell through again. He Mingyuan, can you ever be serious? It’s like this every single time. I’m starting to doubt your capabilities."
Ning Lebao stood in the small grove, stomping her feet in anger at He Mingyuan and pacing back and forth. This latest failure made her anxious; she just wanted to get rid of Ning Huaizhi quickly, and she hadn't expected it to be so difficult. Clearly, in the past, whenever she set a trap, Ning Huaizhi would walk right into it. What had changed recently?
He Mingyuan’s gaze was vacant; he didn't react to her words at all. Seeing this when she turned back made Ning Lebao even angrier.
"He Mingyuan, are you even listening to me? It’s one thing to fail this time, but with your attitude, are you planning to fail again next time?"
"Lebao." He Mingyuan suddenly snapped out of his daze, grabbing Ning Lebao’s shoulders, his eyes full of panic. "Huaizhi… she was hit by a car. She didn't come to school today. Did something happen to her?"
"What?" Ning Lebao was dizzy from being shaken and couldn't process his words at first. Ning Huaizhi had been hit by a car? He hadn't told her that. When she arrived, she had only seen He Mingyuan’s dejected look and assumed the plan had failed. So, Ning Huaizhi had been in an accident? That was perfect.
A hint of joy appeared on Ning Lebao’s face; this was just about what she wanted. It would be best if Ning Huaizhi were left paralyzed, forced to spend the rest of her life in bed.
Ning Lebao impatiently pried his hands off and loosened her shoulders, sneering, "What are you pretending for? When you partnered with me, you didn't care about what would happen to Ning Huaizhi. Don't tell me you’ve suddenly realized you’re actually in love with her?"
He Mingyuan let his hands hang at his sides, his posture slumped and looking utterly defeated. "But I never wanted to kill her."
"Enough. Ning Huaizhi is tough. She just got into a car accident; she’s not dead. Where is she now?"
"She was taken away by the person in the car. They must have sent her to the hospital."
"If she’s at the hospital, then she isn't dying. You weren't seen by anyone, were you?"
He Mingyuan thought back carefully and shook his head. "I don't think so. I only came out after they left. It’s impossible for him to have seen me."
"Then that’s that. Stop worrying about nothing." Ning Lebao rolled her eyes and walked out of the grove in a good mood.
He Mingyuan was heavy-hearted, but he followed behind her. He looked up at his surroundings and saw a classmate talking to someone. Judging by their clothing, they were from the police department.
The classmate spotted him and immediately walked in his direction, with the two police officers following behind.
"He’s He Mingyuan. He’s the one you’re looking for." The classmate pointed at He Mingyuan and said to the officers.
A very bad premonition arose in He Mingyuan’s heart. These two police officers—they weren't here for him, were they? That couldn't be right, could it? How could that be?
He Mingyuan gave a dry laugh. "May I ask what you need me for?"
The two officers produced their police badges and showed them to He Mingyuan.
"There is a matter concerning you. We need you to come with us to give a statement."
He Mingyuan felt even worse. He subconsciously looked toward Ning Lebao, seeking her help. The police followed his gaze.
Ning Lebao immediately moved a step to the side, distancing herself. "The person you’re looking for is him. He and I are just ordinary friends."
The police looked back at He Mingyuan. He Mingyuan knew Ning Lebao wouldn't help him, so he could only nod with a dry laugh.
"Okay."
At least it couldn't be here. If this matter blew up, he wouldn't have the face to stay at school.
Soon, He Mingyuan left with the police. The interrogation room was simply furnished, with only a few chairs, a table, and a water dispenser nearby. Officer Zhang fetched a cup of water and placed it in front of He Mingyuan. Seeing how nervous he was, Officer Zhang offered some reassurance.
"We brought you here just to ask a few routine questions. You can go once we're done. Don't be nervous."
He Mingyuan gave a dry laugh and said nothing.
"Are you and Ning Huaizhi ex-boyfriend and girlfriend?"
He Mingyuan’s heart leaped into his throat. He knew it; these people were definitely here because of Ning Huaizhi.
