Chapter 33: The Master's Reward

Wu Gang even suspected that Jiang Fan’s claim of wanting to cooperate with the three chiefs was merely an attempt to gather information for Immortal Xu.
Otherwise, why would Jiang Fan ask about their arrangements?
“Brother Wu, don’t misunderstand. I only feel that this matter concerns the survival of the three chiefs, myself, and even the Wild Wolf Gang. We cannot afford the slightest carelessness! That is why I must know the three chiefs’ plans. After all, my master’s strength is probably not as simple as it appears.” Jiang Fan hurriedly explained, his expression earnest.
“There is nothing to discuss! We cannot possibly let you know our plans. And if you cannot satisfy me, then there is no need for us to cooperate at all! You are, after all, Old Demon Xu’s disciple. It will not be so easy for us to trust you.” Third Chief Wu Gang spoke coldly at once.
Jiang Fan’s expression grew somewhat ugly as well. He knew that winning their trust so easily was impossible.
His identity was simply too sensitive. He was Old Demon Xu’s disciple, while the Wild Wolf Gang was preparing to deal with Immortal Xu.
Naturally, this matter could not succeed without difficulty.
“My cheap master will refine me into a Human Blood Treasure Pellet sooner or later. My first three senior brothers and sisters are proof of that! I certainly will not sit around and await death,” Jiang Fan said. “Since Brother Wu still finds it difficult to trust me, I will present the three chiefs with a token of my sincerity on the very day you make your move. I only hope that once you have killed that old demon, you will spare my life.”
“That would be excellent!” Wu Gang nodded. “Rest assured. Which of the three chiefs is not a man of loyalty? So long as your sincerity is sufficient, we naturally will not make things difficult for you. In fact… we can even let you become Immortal Jiang of Descending God Mountain.
“However, let me make this clear first: if you dare betray us in any way, the entire Wild Wolf Gang will never let you off!”
“Brother Wu, rest assured. I will never stand on Old Demon Xu’s side. I have no desire to be refined into a Human Blood Treasure Pellet!” Jiang Fan nodded solemnly. “Since that is settled, let us part ways for now. When the three chiefs are ready to act, you will naturally see my sincerity.”
“Very good. I look forward to seeing what you do…” Wu Gang smiled faintly and said no more.
The two went their separate ways. Jiang Fan’s thoughts were exceedingly complicated as he traveled. He had originally intended to make use of the three chiefs first, obtaining some rare treasures of heaven and earth so that he could further increase his strength.
Now, it seemed that he would have to rely on himself to improve his cultivation.
“看来我突破练气三层的事情,得提前了!”姜帆感到了一股莫大危机。

He quickly returned to the cultivation plaza on Descending God Mountain. By then, the sky had begun to darken, and the group of youths and children had already gone back to rest.
Old Demon Xu, however, was still there. He sat cross-legged in silence nearby, seemingly waiting for something.
When he saw Jiang Fan, Old Demon Xu immediately rose and walked toward him with a smile.
“Good disciple, I already know everything about what you did on South Peace Street today. You did very well. I simply did not expect your talent to be so impressive. You have mastered a spell in such a short time. Quickly, cast it and let your master have a look.”
“It is all thanks to your instruction, Master. If you had not taught me the Azure Wood Seal, I would never have been able to run rampant on South Peace Street. I shall cast the Azure Wood Seal now and ask for your guidance.” Jiang Fan was greatly startled inwardly, but his face showed only delight.
He had not expected Old Demon Xu to learn of the news so quickly. Clearly, the old man was not as isolated and alone as he appeared. Perhaps he even had people and informants within the Wild Wolf Gang.
Jiang Fan even suspected that the old demon already knew that the three chiefs intended to deal with him.
After all, if he had planted spies within the Wild Wolf Gang, learning of such a matter would have been easy.
Jiang Fan hurriedly formed the hand seals. Of course, he did not complete them quickly. Instead, he deliberately slowed his movements, making himself appear clumsy and unfamiliar.
Before long, a huge, illusory azure seal condensed in the air.
“Go!” Jiang Fan shouted. Controlling the Azure Wood Seal, which was nearly half a meter across, he sent it crashing down onto the stone floor of the cultivation ground.
With a loud bang, the seal’s immense power smashed a sizable pit into the ground. The hard stone slabs shattered beneath it.
“Excellent! Excellent! I truly did not misjudge you!” Joy appeared in Old Demon Xu’s eyes. “Judging from your performance today, it seems that your rampage through South Peace Street was based on genuine ability. Since you performed so well, your master will naturally not disappoint you. I will reward you with thirty spirit stones.”
As he spoke, Old Demon Xu took thirty low-grade spirit stones from his storage pouch.
“Thank you, Master! After I return, I will certainly cultivate diligently!” Jiang Fan hurriedly accepted them respectfully, his eyes filled with delight.
“You are quite impressive. Let me see how long it will be before your cultivation breaks through to the third level of Energy Refinement.” As he spoke, Old Demon Xu seized Jiang Fan’s wrist with a thin hand as withered as rotting wood, then began sensing him with the power of his consciousness.

It did not take long for Old Demon Xu’s expression to turn somewhat strange.
“Something is wrong. You are only at the second level of Energy Refinement, so why is the spiritual power within your body so abundant? This means that you will require even more spiritual energy to break through to the third level.”
“Master? Is there a problem?” Jiang Fan asked, pretending not to understand.
“The spiritual power within your body is several times greater than that of cultivators at the same level! In other words, to break through, you will need several times the spiritual energy required by ordinary cultivators at your level.” Old Demon Xu frowned. “Very well. I have fifty-three spirit stones remaining here. I shall give them all to you as well. After you return, you need not go to South Peace Street so often. Cultivate diligently and strive to reach the third level of Energy Refinement as soon as possible.
“Once you break through to the third level, you will become my sole direct disciple. I will not only give you the antidote to the Seven-Day Heart-Eroding Powder, but also teach you even more powerful spells.”
As he spoke, Old Demon Xu handed Jiang Fan every low-grade spirit stone remaining in his storage pouch.
“Thank you, Master. I will certainly break through to the third level of Energy Refinement as soon as possible.” Jiang Fan hurriedly clasped his fists and bowed respectfully, then unceremoniously stored away every last low-grade spirit stone Old Demon Xu possessed.
“Very well. You may leave now.” Old Demon Xu waved his hand.
“This disciple takes his leave!”
After Jiang Fan departed, a ferocious expression emerged in Old Demon Xu’s eyes.
“Wild Wolf Gang, you truly are audacious. You actually dare prepare to move against me!
“Yet… you are destined to meet a miserable end. While you make your secret arrangements, I will naturally prepare some methods and traps of my own.
“However, now is not the time to sever all relations. Just wait. Once this boy Jiang Fan breaks through to the third level of Energy Refinement, I will refine him into a Human Blood Treasure Pellet and use it to advance my cultivation. At that time, not one of you will escape a tragic fate…”
Old Demon Xu muttered coldly to himself, his eyes filled with murderous intent. Clearly, he already knew that the Wild Wolf Gang was preparing to deal with him.
