Volume One, Chapter Four: Bloodstained
The moment Ning Yu finished speaking, a sharp slap echoed through the room.
Half of Ning Yu’s face flushed red. The Virtuous Consort’s beautiful eyes brimmed with tears as she trembled, pulling back her hand and sternly scolding, “Enough!”
“Mother, Your Majesty’s brother!” Ning Moxue stood beside them, like a frightened fawn caught in the middle, unsure of what to do.
Ning Yunshu observed the three of them, feeling as if she were watching a farcical play.
In the end, Ning Yu had spoken his true thoughts. Because she was his own younger sister, he felt that she, a princess who had fled from the Xiongnu and returned, had brought shame upon him.
The slap from the Virtuous Consort seemed more like a blow of humiliation and anger. After all, wasn’t Ning Yu’s sentiment shared by everyone in the palace today?
Yet, they seemed to have forgotten that if it hadn’t been for her willingness to marry into the Xiongnu back then, the great Da Su empire might have ceased to exist long ago!
Ning Yu pressed his tongue against the swollen side of his face and fixed his complex gaze once more on Ning Yunshu.
The Virtuous Consort stepped forward to Ning Yunshu’s side, her eyes gentle and voice kind, “Tongtong, don’t blame your brother; he is just confused out of concern.”
“Mother, you need not worry about me. Call the palace maids, at least they can give me some water,” Ning Yunshu said, her throat parched as if it were on fire.
Only then did they realize that since she had fainted, she had not drunk a drop, and upon waking, had forgotten all about it.
“Hurry! Hurry!” the Virtuous Consort ordered the servants.
Ning Moxue quickly stepped forward, pouring tea and holding it before Ning Yunshu with both hands.
She glanced faintly at Ning Moxue’s reflection in the tea before taking the cup and drinking it all at once, then another, cup after cup.
Everyone stood frozen, stunned by how thirsty she was.
“Tongtong, slow down. The imperial kitchen is preparing food. There’s no rush,” the Virtuous Consort said, her voice slightly choked.
Only after the sixth cup did she stop drinking, her previously vacant eyes now showing a bit more spirit.
“I’m tired,” she said, casually handing the cup back to Ning Moxue, spilling tea onto her delicate hand.
Ning Yu immediately stepped forward, snatching the cup and staring at Ning Moxue’s hand with concern. “Are you alright?”
Ning Moxue shook her head repeatedly. “Just wet.”
Hearing this, Ning Yu glared at Ning Yunshu. “Xue’er humbles herself to serve you tea. What more could you want?”
Ning Yunshu frowned. The love and care—or lack thereof—was painfully obvious.
Once, Ning Yu had cared for her just as much, but seven years apart had only drawn him closer to Ning Moxue, making the bond between these real siblings feel like that of strangers.
He even dared to say “humbles herself,” implying that, in his eyes, she, who had been violated by the Xiongnu, was no match for the noble Ning Moxue.
“Brother, sister did not mean it,” Ning Moxue sincerely explained.
Ning Yunshu no longer wished to speak and lay down, turning her back on themI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
