Volume One: Hell-Level Lord World Chapter 137: The Hero’s Tomb
Gazing in the direction Chen Gu pointed, Kebas suddenly recalled something.
“Sir, do you think it’s possible that the existence of Shadowmoon Fortress isn’t what we’ve assumed—that it’s not merely there to support other cities?”
Chen Gu glanced at Kebas.
Among his heroes, Kebas was one of the few who had survived from the Elven Kingdom. He had a certain understanding of the situation there.
He had also heard of Shadowmoon Fortress. After all, its location was only two days’ journey from Nest City.
As the main hero of Nest City, Kebas was well aware of the fortress’s situation.
But now, with Chen Gu’s words, Kebas began to realize something.
At the location Chen Gu indicated stood a wild structure—the Hero’s Mausoleum.
This was one of the outdoor treasure houses.
Entering it meant facing undead troops; defeating them would yield a large sum of gold and a few precious items.
This Hero’s Mausoleum was also marked on the Elven maps.
It was a well-known leveling spot where all Elven heroes would visit once in their lifetime.
But now it seemed the situation was different.
Shadowmoon Fortress might very well have been built to defend the Hero’s Mausoleum.
Having deduced this possibility, Chen Gu looked at Kebas, who wore an expression of shock.
“Could it be that the Elven Kingdom was targeted by the undead long ago?”
“Unlikely. But that doesn’t concern us. We only need to manage ourselves. Regardless of the Hero’s Mausoleum’s condition, I don’t think the undead would occupy Shadowmoon Fortress. Instead, they might take everything from Shadowmoon Fortress to the Hero’s Mausoleum and establish a new city there.”
“That’s plausible.”
Kebas nodded firmly.
“If that’s the case, we must prepare for a great battle.”
Chen Gu looked at Kebas with some puzzlement.
He had initially noticed this issue just to adjust their route.
But what did Kebas mean by that?
Only then did Kebas explain: “Previously, the Hero’s Mausoleum was a place for our Elven heroes to farm gold and treasures; each hero could visit only once in their lifetime.
“But that applies to our Elven heroes. For the undead, the situation might be different. Perhaps the Hero’s Mausoleum supplies them with heroes.”
Upon hearing this, Chen Gu’s expression darkened.
“In other words, the enemy might have many heroes?”
“Highly likely,” Kebas said earnestly.
Chen Gu thought for a moment before deciding, “Let’s go and see. I won’t retreat just because of a guess without even laying eyes on the enemy.”
Kebas didn’t argue. They both understood the gravity of the situation ahead. After regrouping, they quickly readied themselves.
Soon, the Vineglow set course for the original location of Shadowmoon Fortress.
As they neared the fortress, Kebas led a swarm of mosquitoes to scout ahead.
Chen Gu had also released all the fire spirit crows into the sky.
The fire spirit crows flew overhead, gathering the power of sparks.
Meanwhile, the corpse vines and tunneling worms burrowed underground, ready to confront any sudden enemy.
Before long, the cloud-like mosquito swarm returned.
“Well?” Chen Gu asked.
Just as they suspected, the undead had rebuilt a city centered around the Hero’s Mausoleum.
Shadowmoon Fortress had been abandoned by them.
“Is there no one left in Shadowmoon Fortress?”
Chen Gu asked the crucial question.
Knowing the enemy possessed many heroes, his immediate thought wasn’t how to circumvent the area, but how to trap and eliminate all the enemy heroes there.
Chen Gu was well aware of what he lacked most at present.
The Longwind Territory was short of heroes capable of managing villages.
The Woodland Garden lacked heroes to govern the city.
He needed heroes who could form legions.
Heroes were scarce everywhere.
If the enemy had many heroes here, defeating them might yield numerous hero certificates.
With those certificates, Chen Gu could convert them into heroes usable by elves or other races through various means.
Then, would he not have enough heroes?
Thus, Chen Gu resolved immediately: they would strike—and do so without delay.
This expedition to Shadowmoon Fortress was to assess the situation and determine how to fight.
Charging out blindly was out of the question.
Though he brought troops, they were too few for a siege and lacked siege weapons—it would be suicide.
So Chen Gu’s plan was to lure the enemy out in waves.
Using Vineglow’s defenses combined with Kebas and Lister’s field combat abilities, they would pick off enemy forces.
If they could capture Shadowmoon Fortress, all the better.
After all, it was originally the Elven stockpile point, with a superior defensive system.
When Kebas returned, Chen Gu immediately inquired about the fortress’s interior.
“No one’s left, but there are some wandering undead inside.
“I went in to check; the city’s heart and building stones are gone. It seems the undead dismantled everything.”
“That makes using Shadowmoon Fortress as a defense point less convenient.
“Kebas, go again to the direction of the Hero’s Mausoleum and scout enemy deployments.
“I’ll give you an hour. That’s just enough time for Vineglow to level up to stage two.
“I’ll pick a good spot to set up our defenses, and then we’ll discuss how to handle the enemy.”
“Understood.”
Along the way, Kebas had discussed plans with Chen Gu several times and understood them clearly.
With orders received, Kebas took flight toward the Hero’s Mausoleum.
Chen Gu kept vigilant over the surroundings.
He couldn’t afford to be caught off guard by an ambush.
While Chen Gu managed Vineglow and Kebas scouted, Lister led his team beyond Vineglow’s range.
Lister intended to survey the nearby environment.
As a frontline hero, every time he arrived somewhere, he sought the best battleground suited to his strengths.
He knew exactly how to maximize his combat potential.
Even if some gathered intelligence was useless later, he occupied himself with it whenever possible.
The ensuing battle between Chen Gu’s forces and the undead did not occur at Shadowmoon Fortress or the Hero’s Mausoleum, but rather in the nearby woods.
It began when Lister’s team encountered a passing undead force.
