Wait a moment, Chen Gu immediately sensed something was off.

Hadn’t it been said before that Xinisara was planning to ambush Yuerxin? How had it now turned into her delivering herself to be slaughtered? There was a clear contradiction here.

And up to now, she still hadn’t explained how she ended up nailed to the tree.

The more he listened, the less Chen Gu trusted the Misiunas before him; his grip on his weapon tightened, and he slowly raised it.

Misiunas, unaware of Chen Gu’s suspicions, continued recounting what had happened.

"Yuerxin agreed to Xinisara’s request and killed her, but he didn’t return her body to the Bright Palace—after all, Yuerxin had just escaped from there. After the deed was done, Yuerxin planned to leave this place and head south, to the island where the elves were born. As long as he returned to the ancestral land, the elves would still have a chance to resist the cataclysm. But none of us expected that when Xinisara turned undead, her three personal guards would also become undead.

In the battle, Yuerxin exhausted too much magic killing Xinisara and was ambushed by one of the three guards. I am Yuerxin’s last personal guard. While protecting him, I was nailed to a tree, and having already been poisoned by the undead, I ended up like this. I’ve hung from this tree for years, and even when lucid, there was no one to set me free.

Today, by great fortune, I have met you. You’re here for Yuerxin, aren’t you? Set me free—just set me free and I’ll take you to him."

Chen Gu glanced calmly at Misiunas. "I don’t believe you," he said.

The moment the words left his lips, the Scarecrow Slayer swung his blade and severed Misiunas’s head from her body. Even decapitated, she didn’t die instantly; her eyes stared wide as she shouted, "Why don’t you believe me?"

Chen Gu thrust his sword, pinning Misiunas’s head to the ground, then took out some Holy Lake Water intended for experiments and poured it all over her head.

His actions made it clear—there would be no explanations.

From the moment Misiunas began speaking, Chen Gu had harbored his own suspicions: while she was indeed a royal guard of the elven queen, she might not have served Yuerxin at all, but rather Xinisara. As for the truth or falsehood of her tale, Chen Gu neither knew nor cared.

From her words, it was clear that the last elven queen had escaped from here. Additionally, the undead catastrophe had been brought about by the fourth elven queen, Xinisara. Whether that was the full truth, Chen Gu couldn’t say.

One thing, however, was certain: the undead disaster had come from the far north of this world, while the elves had first appeared on a small southern island on the map. If the elves had truly sealed their cities on the queen’s command when the undead arrived, then the farther south they went, the more likely they would find cities not occupied by the undead.

As long as he could take such a city, his odds of victory would greatly improve.

As for the elven queen’s affairs, they mattered little to the overall battle.

"Dispose of it," Chen Gu said, glancing at Misiunas’s headless corpse. "And leave the arrow in place."

With that, Chen Gu began searching the area.

Certain details in Misiunas’s story had told him this place was once the site of an elven queen’s coronation. The water in this pool was clearly no ordinary liquid.

Just now, when he’d dealt with Misiunas’s still-talking head, Chen Gu had emptied a whole bottle of Holy Lake Water. Now, with an empty vial at hand, he filled it with water from the pool.

By the time he finished, the Scarecrow Slayer had already dealt with Misiunas’s corpse. As instructed, Misiunas’s legs still hung from the severed branch, while the rest of her body had been burned to ash.

"Alright, let’s search elsewhere—see if there’s anything else of note," Chen Gu said, shifting his attention.

But as his gaze fell on the owl still hanging from a branch, he pointed and added, "Deal with that one too."

The Scarecrow Slayer swung his scythe without hesitation.

As the owl’s body was sliced in two, Chen Gu suddenly saw a beam of moonlight shine from its remains. The light gathered in the air, materializing into a spectral owl.

"I am the guardian witch of this forest. Thank you for releasing me from endless darkness. As a token of gratitude, I can do one thing for you. How about I divine your fortune for the days ahead?"

Watching the spectral owl dissipate in the moonlight, Chen Gu shook his head. "Do you have any way to deal with Black Castle?"

"Black Castle? You mean the new undead capital built upon the ruins of the human kingdom’s capital? Forget it—there’s hardly a chance. You may not know, but after Yuerxin ordered the cities sealed, the elves mounted a final assault, bringing every golden and green dragon with them. Not only did they lose themselves, but all the dragons as well."

Chen Gu recalled the sky full of bone dragons he’d seen upon entering this lord’s domain and nodded in understanding.

"You must have seen those bone dragons flying everywhere. Let me tell you something else: inside Black Castle, there are Death Angels—formed from angels slain in battle. And there are many of them."

At this, Chen Gu shook his head. "That’s not enough."

"Fine, one more thing: those Death Angels were killed by an undead ambush. Otherwise, given the nature and power of angels, the undead could never have taken the human capital—at the very least, they couldn’t have captured Cloud City."

This made Chen Gu’s eyes light up.

He nodded. "That’s enough. This information is just what I needed. We’re even."

The owl, however, seemed displeased. "What do you mean, ‘even’? You really don’t know what I could do for you."

"I’ve already got the information I wanted. You should go; I still have things to do."

"No, if I left now, it would be a disgrace. I’ll give you two choices: first, I’ll activate the Eye of Clairvoyance and let you see a random location. Second, you may ask me one more question."

"You’re not easy to negotiate with, are you? Very well—I want to find Yuerxin. I know she escaped; that’s why I came here from my landing point. Since I’ve found this place, can you tell me where she went?"

The owl was silent for a moment.

"I’ll give you a map. Find her yourself. You really have no idea what you’re missing."
