Chapter 109: Don’t Mention Gu Mojiang
Perhaps everyone only knows a superficial side of Gu Mojian; perhaps no one has ever truly understood him in depth.
Gu Mojian, male, human, exact age unknown. He was the eldest disciple of Wumei Mountain, the second head of the Gu family, and the central figure of the Gu family incident.
The Gu family was a lineage of diviners from the very beginning, but due to an incomplete inheritance, by the time it reached Gu Mojian, only a general outline remained. Although Gu Mojian was only the second head of the family, the Gu family’s legacy stretched back many years prior; it was simply that later records failed to include them. Before the head of the family was officially titled "Family Head," generations of leaders were known as "Clan Chiefs." Large families were densely populated, with numerous branches and sub-factions. These details were clearly documented in the surviving records of the Gu family, and both Gu Zhiheng and Chu Xingran were well aware of them.
"What everyone knows about Gu Mojian is only a fraction, though it’s not an insignificant amount. We just need to understand a few more details," Liu E said while sitting to the side, playing with his phone and occasionally interjecting.
Back then, despite his lack of genuine mastery, Gu Mojian boasted of his prowess everywhere and even resorted to learning crooked, heterodox arts in secret. Yu Zidu’s descent into demonic obsession was caused by the flawed cultivation techniques Gu Mojian had provided, which ultimately led to Yu Zidu losing control and slaughtering an entire city—a fact Ye Zheng was also aware of.
Exploiting his status as Ye Zheng’s disciple, Gu Mojian committed many heinous acts, perfecting the arts of deception, swindling, and fraud. Because of him, countless families were torn apart, with spouses separated and lives ruined. The Gu family, meanwhile, grew rapidly in wealth and status due to the ill-gotten gains Gu Mojian brought in. At that time, Ye Zheng was stationed at Duantian Cliff and had not returned for a long time, leaving him ignorant of much of what Gu Mojian had done. It was only because of the incident with Yu Zidu that Ye Zheng discovered the sins Gu Mojian had committed behind his back, leaving him with a heavy burden of guilt.
Later, when Ye Zheng discovered Gu Mojian’s ambition, he tried to reason with him, but it all proved futile. During that period, Ye Zheng was preoccupied with many affairs and rarely had time to discipline Gu Mojian, giving the latter the opportunity to play his schemes and even form cliques to conspire in rebellion.
Ye Zheng was aware of everything, but because he lacked the time to deal with it, Gu Mojian became even more arrogant and tyrannical. Driven by his vaulting ambition, he eventually conspired with others to revolt.
"Actually, many people know about these things, but no one is willing to bring them up. The Gu family is too obsessed with their reputation and does not allow anyone to speak nonsense outside," Liu E said, looking at Gu Zhiheng, aware that Gu Zhiheng was more than just a member of the Gu family.
"Hmm, I know about this too. It’s just that I can’t locate where Gu Mojian is sealed," Gu Zhiheng replied, his tone cold but honest. He understood much about the Gu family’s history, but he had no interest in managing it. After so much time had passed, any hearsay was bound to be distorted unless one had witnessed it personally.
As for the Gu family, the current mission was twofold: locate the site of Gu Mojian’s seal to break it, and then resolve the issue of the family’s altered destiny. Gu Zhiheng found this puzzling. If the fault truly lay with the Gu family, why not simply endure the consequences? Why the need for change? Was it for Ye Zheng’s sake, or was it because only Ye Zheng’s return could truly settle the matter?
"Let’s stop talking about Gu Mojian for now. Let’s head back to the Yecheng District first," Gu Zhiheng said, feeling vexed. Why did everything seem to revolve around him? Why was he connected to every single thing? Gu Mojian, while called the ancestor of the Gu family, was also its greatest sinner. It was absurd that the Gu family hadn’t sought to resolve these issues when they first occurred, waiting hundreds of years before even thinking about fixing them.
"A-Heng, the reason the Gu family’s affairs have dragged on until now is because of you," Liu E said softly, sensing Gu Zhiheng’s poor mood. It wasn’t that the Gu family didn’t want to handle it; they simply couldn’t. Only Gu Zhiheng could. Because Gu Zhiheng was not just Gu Zhiheng—he was also Ye Zheng, the only one capable of resolving this crisis. Therefore, Gu Zhiheng had no choice but to accept his burden.
"The people Gu Mojian allied with were no ordinary folk; they were the top-tier monster clans of that era. If you are innocent, then there isn't a single innocent person in this world," Qing Xiu remarked with a scoff. Gu Mojian was never a good person to begin with. "This is just ridiculous. It was someone else’s mistake, yet now my master is the one left to clean it up. I’m speechless." Qing Xiu rolled her eyes and walked toward Gu Zhiheng.
"Let’s stop mentioning Gu Mojian for the moment. Be careful, or that guy might go mad, and we’ll be the ones to suffer," Liu E said with an awkward smile before standing up to leave.
Seeing that even Liu E said so, the group sighed helplessly and began packing up to leave.
"Hey! You’re all leaving? What about me? Are you really going to abandon me?" Seeing them prepare to depart, Yu Zidu panicked. Was his master truly not going to deal with him?
"You might as well stay here contentedly. If he ever changes his mind one day, perhaps there will still be a chance for you," Mo Han said languidly, leaving with Chu Xingran without looking back. Gu Zhiheng didn't want to get involved, so Mo Han saw no reason to meddle in matters that didn't concern him.
Watching them leave, Yu Zidu felt a deep sense of loss. It seemed his master was truly unwilling to forgive him. If he hadn't trusted Gu Mojian’s words back then, he wouldn't have become the person his master despised. It was all Gu Mojian’s fault. He, too, was a victim; had he not trusted his so-called "eldest martial brother" so blindly, he wouldn't have committed so many wrongs.
However, so much time had passed that dwelling on it felt meaningless. He would just have to wait for the day his master was willing to forgive him. Yet, that might take a long time. He didn't know how long he would be stuck here—perhaps another few hundred years.
"Hey! My master said you’re free to move around; you don’t have to stay here," Qing Xiu called out as she turned back briefly before hurrying off again. She knew that despite everything, her master’s heart was kind, even if he didn't know how to express it.
"Little Junior Sister, please tell Master that I will definitely reform!" It was wonderful to know his master still cared for him. Although he couldn't leave with them, he was satisfied with this outcome. He was truly grateful for his master’s tolerance. As for his eldest martial brother, Gu Mojian, he would never let him go—not even if he were to become a ghost himself.
