Liu Qi felt a bit resentful toward Gu Zhiheng over what had happened tonight. How could he sacrifice a brother just to watch a good show? Even if it was to help him dig up some background on Lin Yao, he didn’t need to put the man through that much, did he?

“Brother, only by enduring the hardest hardships can one rise above others!” Gu Zhiheng held back a laugh as he patted Liu Qi’s cheek, then slapped a talisman onto him before Liu Qi could react. This way, when Lin Yao and Liu Qi went home together tonight and things got a little heated, he’d be able to keep his life intact.

“All right, I won’t keep you any longer. Let’s catch up another day!” Waving at Liu Qi and Lin Yao as they got into a cab and left, Gu Zhiheng’s expression instantly changed.

Liu E, standing beside him, was utterly baffled. Was this kid some kind of opera mask artist, switching faces so quickly? One moment he was laughing, the next he was as cold as a stranger.

“Let’s go see what tricks this woman is up to,” Gu Zhiheng said, giving Liu E a nudge to snap him out of his daze. He dragged him to the car parked nearby.

There were quite a few people out tonight, so it was safer to drive.

“Little brother, I think sometimes you’re pretty crafty—nothing like the innocent front you put on,” Liu E remarked, now serious, his gaze intent on Gu Zhiheng.

He’d thought the kid was really naive, but clearly he’d underestimated him. With someone this versatile, it seemed the Gu family had made the right choice; Gu Zhiheng was more than capable of bearing their burdens.

“Don’t flatter me. I’m tired of hearing all those sweet words,” Gu Zhiheng replied. He’d been praised endlessly since childhood, and such compliments had long since become stale. How many people spoke the truth, or truly praised from the heart?

“I mean it. You’re even better than your ancestor. That guy was all show and no substance.” Liu E chuckled awkwardly, then fell silent.

Gu Mojiang, in truth, was no simple man either. Everyone only ever saw the surface—no one had ever really tried to understand him.

“If you’re talking about my ancestor, say so directly. Why look at me like that? I’m not him,” Gu Zhiheng said, feeling a bit uncomfortable under Liu E’s gaze.

These ancient spirits—living so long, always so sentimental. But what’s past is past.

“I’m just feeling nostalgic, looking at your face,” Liu E said with a bitter smile. Gu Zhiheng’s face was exactly like that man’s.

No matter how many lifetimes he lived, he could never escape the Gu family. Many of them knew these old stories, but no one ever spoke them aloud. The current Gu family was different from the one before; the old master was not Gu Zhiheng, and Gu Mojiang’s grave was nowhere to be found.

He was simply feeling a bit wistful, reminiscing when he saw that face. But now there was no need—this guy was right by his side every day.

“Hey, do you have enough cultivation to guarantee there’ll be a good show later?” It wasn’t that Liu E doubted Gu Zhiheng, but he genuinely had no idea just how strong he was.

Gu Zhiheng was shrouded in a black mist tinged with golden light—Liu E couldn’t see through him at all. He looked like any ordinary person, yet that black-gold mist signaled he was anything but.

“Of course I do. Just wait and see what I can do.” Gu Zhiheng grinned. The scene about to unfold would truly be something—best watched with heavy censorship, and definitely not suitable for a first-person view.

“Oh, please. I’ve lived for so many years—what haven’t I seen? Don’t get all dramatic.” Outwardly, Liu E appeared cultured and polite, but Gu Zhiheng knew better than anyone what he was really like.

“Pfft, you old relic, what would you know?” Gu Zhiheng dismissed him, not realizing how hard he’d regret those words once reality set in.

They followed Liu Qi and Lin Yao by car toward a nearby residential complex. The security wasn’t strict; outside vehicles were allowed entry, so Gu Zhiheng parked right beneath Liu Qi’s building.

After getting out, Gu Zhiheng stuck talismans on himself and Liu E, then took the stairs. The building was old, with no security cameras, making it easier for them to move about.

For extra safety, Gu Zhiheng also put on an invisibility talisman. His ancestors had often mentioned that no one could ever craft such a thing, that it existed only in books. But Gu Zhiheng, refusing to believe it was impossible, had tinkered until he actually managed it. The only downside: it only lasted about an hour and could be used three times a day.

“Oh, don’t rush me, let me shower first!” Lin Yao pushed Liu Qi away and headed into the bathroom.

Gu Zhiheng and Liu E sat on the sofa, watching Liu Qi across from them. The kid wasn’t exactly brave, but not a coward either. Knowing full well who Lin Yao really was, he still managed to hold her in his arms as if nothing was wrong—impressive.

“Have you two no shame? You’re actually going to watch this? What if I can’t perform later?” Liu Qi complained after a phantom hand appeared before him—he knew immediately that Gu Zhiheng and Liu E had arrived. He shot a disgruntled jab at Gu Zhiheng; the two of them were really way too twisted.

“Cut the nonsense—focus on staying alive, got it?” Liu E smacked Liu Qi’s hand away, not letting him get anywhere near Gu Zhiheng.

“Darling, can you bring me a towel? I forgot one!” Lin Yao’s voice floated out from the bathroom. Gu Zhiheng motioned for Liu Qi to hurry up and stop dawdling.

They weren’t just here for entertainment tonight—they also planned to hand Lin Yao over to the Bureau.

That’s why they were playing along with Liu Qi in this little drama.

“Darling, I want you…” Lin Yao’s voice grew sultry, and the air in the bathroom grew thick with tension.

Gu Zhiheng and Liu E glanced toward the bathroom; nothing was hidden from them.

“Not bad—just a bit short,” Gu Zhiheng commented, stroking his chin. Liu E nodded in agreement.

Liu E added, “Her legs are pretty long, but her waist isn’t that slender. Still, the overall proportions are decent.” After looking Lin Yao over, his gaze naturally fell on Gu Zhiheng.

Broad shoulders, slim waist, long legs—classic V-shaped torso. Perfect.

Ahem…

“Ouch, be gentle, you’re hurting me!” Lin Yao whined, then pushed Liu Qi into the bathtub.

The scene that followed was… well, not bad. But what happened next was definitely not for children.

Looking at Liu Qi beneath her, Lin Yao’s expression suddenly turned fierce, her nails morphing into sharp claws. She considered killing Liu Qi outright, but something held her back. Then, grabbing the charging phone on the edge of the tub, she tossed it into the water.

She climbed out of the tub, standing to the side, watching intently.
