Chapter Eighty-Three: The Authority Pays a Visit
Originally, the thought had been to kill directly, but suddenly, the plan shifted to staging an accident. A new smile appeared on Lin Yao’s face. She didn’t want to drain Liu Qi’s energy, but Liu Qi had to die. Since she couldn’t do it herself, she would have to manufacture an “accident.”
“Look at this woman—she’s truly ruthless. No matter what, she got what she wanted, didn’t she?” Gu Zhiheng glanced at the two inside, then lounged lazily on the sofa.
Beside him, Liu E wore a blank expression. This was truly dull—dragged out in the middle of the night to watch something like this.
Suddenly, there was a rapid knocking at the door—urgent and insistent.
With a wave of Liu E’s hand, the door swung open. A group of people rushed in, quickly surrounding the entire room.
“Miss Lin, someone has reported you for attempted murder. Please come with us.” The man in charge was Chu Zhaoting. Gu Zhiheng felt as though this man looked somewhat familiar, but couldn’t quite recall where they’d met, only that he felt a sense of déjà vu.
“Sir, what are you talking about? I don’t understand. My boyfriend was electrocuted—can you save him first?” Lin Yao dabbed at her eyes with feigned tears, but the Bureau personnel weren’t fools.
“We have video evidence of everything that happened. Miss Lin, don’t resist unnecessarily. Please cooperate.” Chu Zhaoting’s face darkened, and he signaled for his subordinates to escort Lin Yao out of the bathroom.
Since she was only wrapped in a towel, they gave her a few minutes to change. Lin Yao considered escaping during this window, but found she couldn’t revert to her true form—she was stuck in human shape. She couldn’t understand why. As the minutes ticked by, Lin Yao resigned herself to being taken away by the Bureau’s people.
Once Lin Yao and the Bureau agents had left, and only Chu Zhaoting remained, Gu Zhiheng tore off his invisibility talisman.
“You arrived quickly. Much appreciated, Director,” Gu Zhiheng said coolly, his tone distant. He didn’t know why, but something about this Bureau director always rubbed him the wrong way, making him irritable.
“It’s you!” Chu Zhaoting stared at that familiar face, stunned for a moment. Wasn’t he supposed to be dead? His sister was with someone else now—so how could this man be here?
“Director Chu, now that you’ve finished your business, it’s time for you to leave.” Liu E also removed his invisibility talisman and stood beside Gu Zhiheng, glaring at Chu Zhaoting with clear annoyance.
This man was nothing good—sinister, shrewd, full of schemes.
“Come now, Lord Liu, when you run into an old acquaintance, isn’t it polite to say hello?” Indeed they were acquaintances; if not for the man standing before him, his sister wouldn’t have cut ties with him. Just thinking about it made him angry, and yet these two had the nerve to get angry first.
“Acquaintance? Who’s your acquaintance? Don’t try to latch onto me.” Liu E didn’t give Chu Zhaoting any face at all. Just looking at him made his skin crawl. If not for this man forcing Ye Zheng and Chu Xingran apart, none of the later mess would have happened. It was all his fault for running his mouth.
“I’m warning you—say one more word and I’ll hit you. Just looking at you pisses me off. What a piece of work!” Liu E spat and turned away, afraid he wouldn’t be able to restrain himself from slapping the man then and there.
“Oh, you’re just a little moth demon, but your tone is quite something.” Chu Zhaoting shot back in disdain, his gaze fixed on Gu Zhiheng.
“What are you looking at me for? You’re not my match. I could crush you in seconds,” Gu Zhiheng replied with equal disdain. What did it matter if he was the Bureau director? He had no fear of these people; if it came to a fight, he’d never waste time talking.
“Why did my sister break up with you? Was it you who dumped her? Are you looking to die?” Chu Zhaoting didn’t understand why Chu Xingran had ended up with Mo Han, or why she’d broken up with the man before him.
“My sister? How could I possibly be with my own sister? Are you out of your mind?” Gu Zhiheng looked at Chu Zhaoting as if he were a fool. Did this man even have a brain? Who would ask such a ridiculous question?
“Sister? Why are you calling her that? Weren’t you two together?” Had Ye Zheng lost his mind? How could he not even keep these things straight?
“I’m telling you, my name is Gu Zhiheng. Have you mistaken me for someone else?” Were Bureau directors required to be brainless to get the job? Gu Zhiheng genuinely couldn’t understand who Chu Zhaoting thought he was. Was it that big shot? Did the two of them really look that much alike? How could every spirit and ghost make the same mistake?
“Ye Zheng, stop pretending. Just tell me why you broke up with Xingran!” Chu Zhaoting was convinced the man was feigning ignorance.
“I told you, I’m not the person you think I am. Chu Xingran is my sister, not my girlfriend.” Gu Zhiheng’s tone was growing impatient, his gaze turning unfriendly. He really couldn’t be bothered to explain further. If not for the mention of Chu Xingran, he wouldn’t have spared Chu Zhaoting a glance.
But one thing was clear—he called Xingran his sister, and Chu Zhaoting called her his sister as well. It seemed his guess was right.
But none of that was his concern. As long as these people didn’t get in his way, Gu Zhiheng couldn’t care less.
“Director Chu, instead of wasting time here with pointless questions, perhaps you should do your job properly, rather than waiting for others to report everything to you,” Gu Zhiheng said, his eyes darkening. He got up and went to the bathroom, worried that Liu Qi might not have died from electrocution, and could drown if left too long.
Seeing Gu Zhiheng lose his temper, Liu E didn’t waste another moment on Chu Zhaoting either. He strode past him, flung open the door, and shoved him outside.
They were all on the same level—there was no need for excessive politeness. None of them cared about appearances. After living so many years, if you hadn’t learned that much, it would truly be laughable.
Gu Zhiheng, meanwhile, pulled Liu Qi from the water, pressed on his chest a few times, and Liu Qi slowly regained consciousness.
Seeing that it was Gu Zhiheng before him, Liu Qi finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“Lin Yao has already been arrested, and Liu Wen’s situation will be handled. Figure out what you want to do next.” Liu E fetched a bathrobe from the bedroom and set it aside, then dragged Gu Zhiheng out of the bathroom.
It was better not to look at someone else’s body too much—seeing too much could bring bad luck.
“What, you didn’t stop me from looking earlier, but now you’re making a fuss? Isn’t that a bit pointless?” Really, this man was too childish.
So what if he’d taken a look? Weren’t they all built the same, with only minor differences in size? As for other matters, only practical experience would reveal the truth. Of course, that was something best left to oneself, not others.
“You… Such bad habits at your age, hmph!” Left speechless by Gu Zhiheng’s retort, Liu E turned away in a huff.
