Chapter 112: Employment Plan
Inside the room, Mulan regarded Farolynch with a strange expression, while Farolynch himself looked thoroughly embarrassed.
“Why did you send him to find me?”
“Uh, I merely mentioned it in passing and gave him a brief explanation of what ‘professor’ means. It wasn’t intentional…”
Farolynch continued to defend himself, but Mulan kept her gaze fixed on him.
“No need to equivocate in front of me.”
Farolynch’s awkward expression lingered for several seconds before gradually settling back into calm.
“It must be hard for your stiff face to feign embarrassment.”
Mulan spoke lightly, and although Farolynch’s face remained neutral, being seen through by her caused genuine embarrassment to flash in his eyes.
“I think that giant, though born of hatred, is not inherently bad and somewhat naive. Judging by that Lady Misfortune’s attitude, the alchemist clearly treats the giant as disposable. But this giant has developed a personality; such false promises are a cruel deception to him!”
Farolynch was a natural resurrector and possessed an innate sensitivity toward non-human things. The claim that devouring the flesh and blood of enemies could transform one into a human was, to him, nothing but a lie.
Of course, alchemy might be wondrous and perhaps there was a way to achieve this, but just relying on that promise was far from sufficient in Farolynch’s eyes.
“Lord Jonst, you are the professor of the Black Castle and a theoretical expert in transcendent knowledge. Tell me honestly, that giant outside—if he consumes the blood and flesh of his enemies, can he truly become human?”
Mulan instinctively glanced at the closed door.
“My research in alchemy is not very deep, and the other party likely employs some advanced ancient alchemical techniques. I cannot say it is absolutely impossible…”
Seeing Farolynch furrow his brow, Mulan shifted her tone.
“But through reasoning and inference, some conclusions can be drawn. Take yourself as an example.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you, Farolynch, resurrector. You were once human with a corpse that does not decay after death, gradually awakening. Your fundamental conditions are, if not far superior, at least not inferior to that giant outside. So, if you wished to truly become normal—”
Mulan recalled the secret tomes she had read on the path of resurrectors and shook her head slightly.
“It’s exceedingly difficult. Becoming a resurrector requires a long evolutionary journey and prolonged cultivation. One must base oneself on the immense power gained during this process, gradually self-improving and evolving, ultimately achieving spiritual self-redemption. The great power obtained is merely incidental.”
Mulan spoke lightly, but even Farolynch understood the challenge implied.
“Hmph, that so-called transformation through devouring flesh and blood is basically a scam. No matter how miraculous alchemy is, I can’t believe it can succeed in such a short time.”
“Lord Jonst, I have a good impression of that giant. I think his path definitely does not lie with that alchemist.”
“With me?” Mulan smiled.
Farolynch nodded seriously. His conviction stemmed not only from having seen the Book of Dawn and the Dawn Mark but also from an intuitive sense.
Outside the door, the avenger obediently stood up but stayed right in front of Mulan’s door. At that moment, Chris and a robed man with a hood approached alongside personnel from the Seventh Division and noticed the burly man standing at the entrance.
“Hm? Why is the avenger here? Come.”
The man’s words carried a certain compelling power to the avenger’s ears, far stronger than Chris’s commands. Though reluctant, the avenger quickly moved to the man’s side.
The guide was also Number Six. He glanced at them and said,
“I’ll report this.”
*Knock, knock, knock.*
“My lord, Miss Chris and her brother have arrived.”
Mulan and Farolynch exchanged glances, pausing their conversation. Farolynch then went to open the door, looked at the newcomers, nodded, and said,
“Please come in.”
Number Six stood by the door as Chris entered first, followed by the hooded man. Upon entering, the man courteously removed his hood, revealing a head of white hair but a surprisingly youthful face.
Mulan stood by the window-side desk. The light from outside shone behind him, casting his front in shadow at that moment.
The white-haired man bowed slightly, smiled, and introduced himself.
“Honorable Lord Jonst, I am Matt, Chris’s brother, an alchemist with some knowledge of ancient alchemy.”
Matt was well aware of his own standing and spoke openly about his expertise.
Mulan stepped forward a couple of paces, his face gradually emerging from the shadow. His expression was serious as he stared directly at the white-haired man.
“Since you put it that way, I’ll get straight to the point. I offer you two choices: first, accept my invitation to become a professor of the Black Castle and a friend of Dilga; second…”
“Lord Jonst, I choose the first.”
Matt interrupted swiftly, but not in a displeasing manner. A faint smile appeared on Mulan’s face.
“So quick to decide. Even if you didn’t choose the first, the second would only mean a simple handling of the consequences and some penalties.”
Matt knew well the situation was not as simple as Mulan suggested but did not expose this. Instead, he steered the conversation elsewhere.
“I need to harness Dilga’s power to complete my vengeance. In return, I will serve Dilga wholeheartedly. My targets for revenge are not just that dangerous man. Well, the danger is only to me. Also, he is not alone, and they have a history with you Dilga people—more than once. In the last Diba War, they were hired by your enemies to participate.”
Mulan narrowed his eyes. He had long heard that the transcendent confrontations in the last war were fierce, and some powerful enemies appeared unrecorded in the intelligence. Dilga had yet to unravel the full details. It seemed this might offer some clarity.
“If you sincerely accept, then it will no longer be ‘you Dilga’ but ‘we Dilga.’ For our own, we will do our utmost. Let’s start with that guy in Solens City. But if he has already fled, then there’s nothing we can do.”
A trace of excitement flickered on Matt’s face.
“He won’t run. We know that man. Especially since Lord Jonst wounded him, he will find a way to retaliate!”
Mulan frowned slightly. That was not good news. He disliked being harassed, so he must find a way to deal with that man.
“Perhaps there is something at the auction that interests him greatly?”
Upon hearing Mulan’s question, Matt smiled knowingly.
“Yes. Something he cannot refuse. He cannot locate it either, so he must wait for the auction to begin. He will definitely show up. However, they are determined to obtain that item. Meeting Lord Jonst today, they realize the risk is high. So on auction day, they will mobilize all available forces. Lord Jonst, how many people do you have?”
This was awkward. Hearing Matt, Mulan realized the opponent was unlikely alone. On Dilga’s side, in Solens, the only transcendent was Mulan Jonst himself. Maybe all the Seventh Division members combined could count as half…
“I handled a rather tricky matter on the way here, eliminating some hidden dangers, but it was rushed. I arrived early. Imperial forces are still wrapping up and might only be on their way now. Time may be tight, but I will find a way.”
Matt and Chris almost simultaneously noticed the wound on Mulan, likely caused by the earlier incident he handled. Learning their side was short-handed, they grew anxious.
“What can we do? Lord, though you are powerful, being alone makes it hard to cover everything!”
“Ah, surely this is the misfortune I bring…”
Chris muttered softly nearby.
“Perhaps I have other plans. Though we lack manpower, there are other forces.”
Mulan turned to look outside the window. In the distance, a towering spire was faintly visible.
“By the way, what about this avenger?”
“That, well…”
As a last resort, the avenger’s existence was, as Farolynch had suspected, a kind of expendable tool—durable, tenacious, and obedient. Matt made no attempt to hide the truth from Mulan, openly explaining the avenger’s purpose and not avoiding mention of the big guy beside them, as he held absolute authority over the avenger as its creator.
Yet both Chris and Mulan keenly noticed the avenger’s shock upon hearing the truth and the despair that overwhelmed him upon realizing he could never truly become human.
