Chapter 139: Guiding You to Find Yourself
Mulan prepared his lessons with remarkable speed, for he had a clear plan for his goals and could precisely outline the key points of the knowledge he was to impart, supplementing them with details from various angles. However, the knowledge of the mystical world was highly fragmented and erratic, which made the task quite demanding.
He had to finish his preparations tonight because someone had already posted the announcement about his class starting tomorrow on the bulletin board before he returned home.
Of course, even with Mulan’s high efficiency, he still couldn’t compare to most of the other professors in the Black Castle, as they generally made no preparations at all.
By the time Mulan finished, the night was already deep. He stretched his limbs before heading to the bathroom for a wash.
As he loosened his clothes, Mulan glanced sideways into the mirror. The wound that once covered his shoulder blade had shed its scab, revealing a somewhat gruesome scar.
This scar, a mixture of bite marks and tears, varied in depth. Near the shoulder close to the neck, it resembled a gaping wolf’s mouth, with faint impressions of fangs at the deepest part. The rest of the fragmented tears extended from there until they faded away across his back.
In the mirror, the entire wound looked like a terrifying wolf’s bite, showing no signs of healing.
Mulan squinted his eyes and whispered to the reflection, “Dobrich...”
Navigating the extraordinary world left no room for carelessness. Even now, with the power of light and darkness beyond ordinary comprehension and the existential strength bestowed by his oath, Mulan still could not completely eradicate the mark left by the Silver Mane.
...
The next morning, Mulan woke from a restless night as usual. However, today he couldn’t afford to linger in bed. He quickly prepared some breakfast and headed to the teaching building.
In front of the castle’s teaching hall, a few early-arriving students gathered in small groups. Although they had seen the announcement yesterday, sometimes new classes or other news were added last-minute.
“Looks like it’s the same as yesterday. Professor Jonst is going to teach?” one student remarked.
“What? This morning?”
“Oh my, I’m going to save a seat. You better drag those two lazy ones out of bed, or we’ll be late!”
Nearby, others also noticed the announcement.
“Professor Jonst is finally holding a class!” “Really?” “Run!” “Go save seats!”
Some students farther away didn’t even bother coming to the bulletin board. They were already running, shouting over their shoulders to friends at the board.
“Which classroom?” “The First Hall!”
Friends shouted back, and many others hearing the news began to run as well.
Some newcomers were confused, but senior students kindly grabbed them and pulled them along.
Hathaway walked leisurely with a ham sandwich in hand. She had gotten up early and before reaching the bulletin board, she noticed some students running—some towards the outside, some to the teaching building.
A fellow new female student exchanged a curious glance with Hathaway.
“What’s happening?”
“No idea!”
A senior who often helped them suddenly appeared and without explanation, grabbed both girls and took off running.
“Huh?” “Senior!” “What’s going on?”
“Quick, grab a seat! Professor Jonst is back to teach! If you’re late, you’ll miss out!”
Instinctively, the two girls followed. Over this period, seniors had often spoken about Professor Jonst—a mysterious, powerful, handsome, amiable, and knowledgeable man.
Hathaway rushed with the senior to the First Hall and lucked out by securing a spot in the middle of the third row near the front.
The scramble for seats was intense. Some students, even when alone, greedily tried to claim an entire row. Often, others simply sat down, ignoring any claims. It was already impressive if one could guard two seats.
The chatter among students grew louder and more excited as the hall quickly filled, some even skipping breakfast.
Hathaway stayed silent, clutching her sandwich with a mixture of nervous anticipation as she gazed out the hall’s window.
‘Could it be him? But it’s only been a year. It shouldn’t be him, right? But the surname is the same!’
At last, as the class time neared, the packed First Hall oddly fell silent. Unlike other professors, Jonst was exceptionally punctual.
The sound of polished shoes striking the floor grew nearer. A tall man in a black trench coat and high top hat passed by the corridor window and soon arrived at the hall entrance.
A faint smile curved Mulan’s lips. Every student’s gaze was fixed upon him.
“Oh, quite a crowd. I thought with this being a last-minute added class, not many would come.”
He entered the hall, approached the podium, removed his hat, and looked out at the tiered seats. Including those who had brought their own stools at the back, the hall was packed with several hundred students.
Almost immediately, Mulan sensed a familiar aura and spotted Hathaway.
Her heart pounded wildly. When she clearly saw Professor Jonst’s face, it felt as if her heart would leap out of her chest.
“It’s him! It really is him!”
Mulan was slightly surprised; he hadn’t expected the daughter of the earl to have enrolled in the Black Castle. What about her twin sister?
With that thought, Mulan smiled and nodded toward Hathaway’s direction.
Some students whispered in excitement, mistakenly thinking the nod and smile were directed at them.
“I was away for some time, so this is my first class back. I see many new faces. I hope your seniors have upheld tradition and have properly tutored you in the basics.”
“Although I do take care of newcomers, this lesson isn’t all foundational. Some of the content will be quite advanced, so make sure to take good notes.”
As he spoke, Mulan pulled out a piece of chalk, glanced at the wall, and managed to create a makeshift blackboard with something resembling a mop nearby. He then wrote a few large characters:
Attributes and Transformation.
Excited whispers broke out among the veteran students.
“Yes, I believe some of you already understand what I’m about to teach. This is truly in-depth content before stepping into the extraordinary. Some of you may have researched similar material or heard bits from other professors, but not everyone fully grasps it.”
Mulan placed his hand on the hat resting on the desk and gently lifted it.
“There’s nothing here, right?”
He lowered the hat back onto the podium, then glanced at the students and slowly lifted just one edge. Light began to spill out.
The hat rose gradually, the light growing brighter—far surpassing the hall’s kerosene lamps—yet it was not glaring.
“This is attribute transformation. My profession is the Radiant Knight, so light naturally manifests.”
As he spoke, the light from the hat became dazzling, forcing many students to squint. Some felt their eyes burn and tears welled up; few could gaze directly at the brilliance.
“Light isn’t always gentle. It can dazzle and even become a truly sharp weapon!”
Mulan grasped the hat and gave it a slight forward sweep. The light extended instantly; even those trying to stare could no longer bear it. All heard a faint tearing sound.
A curtain near the window snapped downward, severed by the light, its edges slightly scorched.
“This is the change in nature!”
Students at the Black Castle longed to truly enter the mystical world. Despite Mulan’s repeated warnings about dangers, that yearning remained undiminished.
Even those who had witnessed special powers from other professors found Mulan’s demonstration far more captivating.
This was because the mysterious forces shown by others often ended up meaningless afterward, but when Professor Jonst began teaching something, it meant some students were already capable of learning that knowledge.
Who might they be? Perhaps me?
Veteran students thought so quietly, while newcomers, unfamiliar with mystical power, were equally excited.
At that moment, with Mulan’s subtle display, the students’ desire soared. He could feel their heartbeats, their heightened emotions, their mental fluctuations.
‘Good!’
“So, I believe some of you have grasped it...”
“Yes, over the coming lessons, I will guide you to discover your talents, to sense your path, to truly lead you into the mysterious realm of the extraordinary, to help you find the true self waiting for you on the other side of reality!”
Boom!
As these words left Mulan’s lips, the First Hall erupted. The students could no longer contain their excitement; their whispered talks grew fervent.
